The plot of Thirteen Brother Pirates: The Journey Begins is narrated by the characters.  This section is designed to introduce them to you.










Captain William “Blacktip” Graves
Name: (English) "Graves" means "steward"
Height: 6’ 1”
Weight: 190 lbs
Age: 47
Description: A physically capable man, he was once a lawyer in Jamaica and employed by Lord Belmont to run his sugar plantation.  Now, he is a pirate captain of three ships and intent upon changing the world. He is a handsome, capable, charismatic leader.  When he sets his mind to something, it comes to be.  Like those of his brother, Captain Richard Graves, his eyes are blue, but that is the only way in which he and his brother are similar. 
Role: Captain of the Freedom











James Flaherty
Name: (Irish) "Flaherty" means "chieftain like"
Height: 5’ 11”
Weight: 180 lbs
Age: 18
Description:  James is nearly six feet tall and thin, but he is strong without being overly muscular, not lanky.  He is quietly charismatic and well-liked among men and women.  He has dark hair and whiskers and needs to shave daily.  His features seem to indicated some distant Roman background.
Role: He is a leader among the orphan brothers.  He performs multiple tasks aboard the HMS Indubitable in order to learn them all.












Patti Mocherie
Name:  (Scottish) "Mocherie" means "beloved"
Height: 5’ 2”
Weight: 95 lbs
Age: 18

Description: Patti has short ginger-colored hair with sky-blue eyes.  She is petite and not curvaceous.  Her skin is very fair.  Nimble and athletic, she is willing to fight for anyone she loves. She reads voraciously and writes well and in difficult times relies on her intellect to solve problems. She is motherly and protective of all the brothers. Role: In London she worked as a scribe for a barrister.  On board ship, she is the assistant to the navigator.











Mac Mocherie
Name:  (Scottish) Mocherie means beloved
Height: 5’ 6”
Weight: 145 lbs
Age: 16

Description:  He is a teenager of average height and size. His hair is reddish, but not as deeply ginger as Patti’s, and his eyes are blue.  His sun-backed skin is full of freckles, so much so that they seem to blend into one another.  He is a masculine version of Patti, and they are clearly related.  Although he is physically average, he is lion-hearted and steadfast in his devotion to Patti.   He has a clear sense of right and wrong. Role: Tailor in London and sail-mender on board.  His sense of right and wrong as well as his love for his sister help him become a leader aboard ship.













Captain Richard Graves
Name: (English) "Graves" means "steward"
Height: 6’
Weight: 200 lbs
Age: 45

Description: A tall and physically robust man, he was trained, like his father, at the Royal Naval Academy, but he has let his body soften over the years through hedonistic indulgence in food and drink.  He is still a physical force to be reckoned with by opponents. He is attractive in a sinister way.
Role: Captain of the HMS Indubitable.













Lieutenant Christian Cadwallader
Name: (Welsh) "Cadwallader" means "leader in battle"
Height: 6’
Weight: 180 lbs
Age: 34

Description: He has dark hair, light skin, and dark brown eyes.  Tall and muscular, he is physically fit and capable of handling any challengers.  He is poised, powerful, and commanding, but not vindictive, petty or harsh. He is capable of inspiring his men through speeches as well as action.
Role: He commands the evening shift aboard the HMS Indubitable and acts as a spy for the Admiral.  He is a father figure and role model for the boys.  He represents the best of the best in the Royal Navy.













Lieutenant Michael Tierney
Name:  (Irish) "Tierney" means "landed proprietor or judge"
Height: 6’ 1”
Weight: 175
Age: 33

Description: He is tall and thin, but physically fit with sun-bleached blond hair and bluish eyes.  His poise and presence make him a force on board.  He is handsome with a boyish face, but his voice and commands are all business.  He is supportive and encouraging among the boys.  He challenges them to think first rather than act.
Role:  He commands the day shift aboard the HMS Indubitable and acts as a spy for the admiral.  He is a father figure and role model for the boys by representing the best of the best in the Royal Navy.


Admiral James Ellsworth
Name:  (English) "Ellsworth" is the name of a village near Cambridgeshire, England"
Height: 6’ 3”
Weight: 210
Age: 51
Description: Tall with broad shoulders that seem to stretch the seams of his coat, the Admiral has a large head and a voice that booms like a cannon.  He believes in the chain of command and in developing men who are physically, mentally and morally capable of leading others. He does not wear a wig. Instead he keeps his own silvery hair long and pulled back in a pony tail.  This is his only protest to the rigorous expectations of the Royal Navy.  He once commanded Lieutenants Tierney and Cadwallader and serves as their mentor.
Role:  Admiral of HMS Victory













Phillip Pesce
Name: (Italian) "Pesce" means "fisherman or fish-like"
Height: 5’ 3”
Weight: 120
Age: 14

Description: He is among the younger boys and somewhat of a whiner. Without a doubt, he is the most talkative among them.  He has dark hair, olive skin and brown eyes.  When intimidated physically by others, he strikes back with a torrent of words. He is jealous of the other orphans and want to be included but feels left out because he is not as physically capable as they are. He is closest to John Ainsworth, who like himself is rather short.
Role: On board ship he is a ratter and eventually a fisherman.













John Ainsworth
Name: (English) "Ainsworth" means "a place with a spring or river"
Height: 5’ 4”
Weight: 130
Age: 15

Description: John is short but stout and muscled.  He is short and physically stout, full of muscle, not fat.  He is an indefatigable bulldog in terms of stature and attitude.   He knows what he is good at.  He is not intimidated by bigger, stronger boys, and he is willing to take on any challenge.  He associates with Pesce.
Role: In London he was a coppersmith and cook.  On board he is a galley cook.   














Charles Conant
Name: (Scotch / Irish) "Conant" means "a river"
Height: 5’ 10”
Weight: 160
Age: 16
Description:  Charles is a wall of lean muscle and is fully capable of performing any physical task.  His “twin” is David Cadogan.  They tend to do things together.  He is the ham among the group and looks for ways to instigate fun.
Role: In London he is a chimney sweep.  On board he is assigned to the ratlines and sails.
















Etienne Pierpont
Name: (French) "Pierpont" means "a stone bridge"
Height: 5’ 11”
Weight: 175
Age: 17

Description: Etienne is above average height but does not have a physically commanding presence as do the other boys.  He can slip unnoticed among his peers and tends to pull away from the crowd.  He is fiercely independent and private.  He keeps secrets well and does not share his own view with others freely.  He uses knowledge and information to his advantage.  He also has much darker skin than most of the boys, indicative of African ancestry. He has experienced prejudice because of mixed race and because he is French and Catholic.
Role: His father was a merchant sailor, and Etienne knows very well how to sail.  He was a butcher in London and is assigned to the galley on board ship.  He is an asset as a helmsman.















David Cadogan
Name: (Welsh) "Cadogan" means "fierce in battle"
Height: 6’ 1”
Weight: 190
Age: 18

Description: Like Conant, David is a hulking boy with a muscular torso honed by sweeping chimneys.  He has brown hair and brown eyes.  He is less educated than the others, but he is loyal to Conant first and then the other boys.  Being Welsh he feels a bit like an outsider among the mostly English group and therefore stays close to Conant, who is an outsider because he is Irish.  The ocean and sailing enthrall him.
Role: In London he was chimney sweep.  On board ship he tends the lines and sails.












Henry Godolphin
Name: (English) "Godolphin" means "valley of springs"
Height: 5’ 8”
Weight: 135
Age: 16

Description:  Henry doesn’t like to talk much and uses music, both his violin and songs, to communicate. He is a willowy boy without much height or muscle. His sandy brown hair longer than that of the other boys, and his features are soft and rounded, giving him a boyish appearance. He lacks any combative tendency.  He will never fight.
Role: He is a musician in London as well as on board ship, where he is assigned to the water brigade and sails.













William Wainwright
Name: (English) "Wainwright" means "waggon maker"
Height: 5’ 9”
Weight: 160
Age: 15

Description:  William does not like the sea. He fears it because he cannot swim. He is bitter about being on board and only wants to leave, but he is conflicted by having a meaningful and inspirational job that is only available on board ship.
Roles:  In London he makes waggons and works with wood.  He does the same aboard ship.



Daniel Champney
Name: (French) "Champney" means "wet country, land near the water"
Height: 5’ 8”
Weight: 160
Age: 16

Description: Daniel is not as well educated as some of the other boys.  He associates with Pierpont, but he seeks the relationship more than Etienne who is bored by him.  He does not like sailing and cannot swim.
Role: Baker in London and cook on board ship. He has entrepreneurial aspirations.












Ayodele Ebanks
Name: (Nigerian and Bahamian) "Ebanks" means "joy comes home"
Height: 5’ 9”
Weight: 145
Age: 18

Description:  His parents were salt rakers in the Bahamas. Two years ago he left them to sail to Bermuda.  He has some sailing skills and a burning desire to get home to see his parents. His black skin has been darkened by exposure to the sun. He is tall, thin and undernourished, even more so than the other boys.
Role: Ayodele forces his way on board the HMS Indubitable in exchange for passage from Bermuda to the Bahamas.  He has some knowledge of sailing and fills in as needed.



Hans Ousterhoudt
Name: (Dutch)"Ousterhoudt" means "eastern wood"
Height: 6’ 2”
Weight: 180
Age: 18

Description:  Hans is a tall boy who slouches from working on wood projects all day. His hands are like vices, and he is incredibly adept as a carpenter.  His hair is blond and his eyes blue-grey.  He does not speak English, but he is learning.  He feels distant from the others because of the language barrier.
Role: In London and on ship he is a wood-worker.













Joseph Climber
Name:  (English) Climber
Height: 5’ 7”
Weight: 155
Age: 18

Description:  He is average in build and size.  There is nothing physically unique about him except his brown hair which is shorn in a circle like other monks of his time. There is nothing exceptional about him except his faith in God.  He has changed his name to Climber due to an incident that galvanized his faith.
Role: Arrives in London aboard a ship from Bavaria as a priest. He is assigned to the ropes and sails on board, but his mission is to share his faith.
